Definition/Description
Magnolia bark extract is obtained from the bark of the plant Magnolia officinalis L. and produced with supercritical carbon dioxide. The bark is washed and oven dried to reduce moisture content before being crushed and extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide. The extract is dissolved in medical-grade ethanol and re-crystallised to yield magnolia bark extract. Magnolia bark extract is mainly composed of two phenolic compounds, magnolol and honokiol. Appearance: Light brownish powder

Conditions under which the novel food may be used
Food category Maximum levels
Chewing gum 0.2% for breath freshening purposes. Based on a 0.2% maximum incorporation level and a maximum gum/mint size of 1.5 g each, each gum or mint serving will contain no more than 3 mg of magnolia bark extract.
Mints (confectionary products) 0.2% for breath freshening purposes. Based on a 0.2% maximum incorporation level and a maximum gum/mint size of 1.5 g each, each gum or mint serving will contain no more than 3 mg of magnolia bark extract.
Additional specific labelling requirements
The designation of the novel food on the labelling of the foodstuffs containing it shall be 'Magnolia Bark Extract'
